Orthodontics Q & A

What kinds of issues does orthodontics address?

Orthodontics can treat a variety of dental issues where alignment and spacing is a concern. This includes overcrowding, unevenly spaced teeth, overbites, underbites, and crossbites. Having straighter teeth, and a more attractive smile can also help patients feel more confident and self-assured in all areas of their lives.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

The amount of time a treatment will take depends on the issue being treated, the patient's overall oral health, and other factors. Some treatments can be completed in a less than a year while others may take three years or longer to correct. The best way to determine how long treatment will take is to contact the office to schedule an appointment and evaluation.

Can orthodontics help me have better oral health?

Having straighter teeth through orthodontics makes it easier to care for them. Eliminating the cracks and crevices where bacteria, plaque, and tartar can hide aides in oral health. Plus, orthodontics can improve your bite balance and bite mechanics, relieving issues like chronic headaches and jaw pain related to temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).

How can I tell what type of orthodontic care I need?

There are many different types of braces and alignment systems from which to choose from. Having an assessment will help to narrow down the choices as your dentist will be able to recommend the best system for you.

Am I too old for braces?

As long as your teeth and underlying jaw bones are healthy, you can enjoy the benefits of orthodontics. Prior to treatment, an assessment will be done to determine if orthodontic treatment is right for you.

At what age should my child be evaluated for braces?

Ideally, children should be evaluated for braces at around seven years of age. Childhood is a time of rapid growth and development. Being evaluated early conditions can be addressed as soon as they occur so future orthodontic treatment can be completed in less time or, in some cases, entirely avoided.
