Family Dentistry Q & A

How often do I need to have a dental checkup?

Patients of all ages should have routine dental checkups every six months to look for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and other issues so those problems can be corrected in their earliest stages. Having a visit every six months also allows us to perform preventive care so you can enjoy better oral health and prevent many problems from occurring.

What happens during a routine dental checkup?

A checkup begins with a medical and lifestyle history to look for issues like diabetes or tobacco use that could make you more prone to developing oral health issues, including gum disease and tooth decay. You'll also be asked about any symptoms you may be experiencing. Next, your teeth, gums and other areas of your mouth will be visually assessed for signs of obvious damage. A dental cleaning will be performed to remove plaque and tartar and to polish the surfaces of the teeth and remove superficial stains. Dental x-rays may also be taken to provide views of the interior portions of your teeth, including the roots and the areas around them. Special instruments will be used to evaluate each tooth for signs of decay, and an oral cancer screening will also be performed. Finally, you'll find out about any issues that may be occurring and learn about potential treatment options.

Are dental X-rays safe?

Yes, dental X-rays are very safe, providing critical information about your oral health that can aid in ensuring you receive the best treatment for your needs. Our office uses the most advanced X-ray techniques to reduce the amount of radiation exposure so you can feel completely confident.

How can I tell if I have gum disease?

Gum disease often causes very few signs during its early stages, and many people may not realize they have gum disease until their gums become sore and swollen or begin to bleed during tooth brushing. As gum disease progresses, teeth may become sore, and you may have persistent bad breath. Eventually, the gums will recede from the tooth surfaces, and the teeth will become loose. Without any care, the affected teeth will eventually fall out.

Insurance & Cost Information:

We accept most dental insurance plans. If you have dental insurance, please bring your plan information with you or have the policy number ready so we can look up your coverage. We will work with you and your dental insurance company to maximize your dental benefits with your existing type of coverage. Also, most insurance plans include patient co-payments, deductibles, and other expenses and treatments that may not be covered.
