Emergency Dentistry Q & A

What is a periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, occurs when bacteria builds up along the gum line, often “hiding” in sticky plaque or tartar that’s been hardened. Over time, these bacteria begin traveling below the gum line, causing infection and causing tooth roots to come loose. Periodontal disease is a top cause of adult tooth loss in the U.S.

What kinds of symptoms are associated with gum disease?

In its very early stages, gum disease causes very few symptoms or sometimes none at all. Many people can have gum disease without even knowing it. As the disease progresses, gums may become swollen, red and tender. Bleeding can sometimes occur when the teeth are brushed. Without treatment, the bacteria will continue to grow, releasing toxins that cause the gum tissue to pull away from the surfaces of teeth. This will expose more of the tooth structure to potential decay. Eventually, the bacteria reaches the root space, causing painful infections, loosening tooth roots, and causing teeth to fall out.

How is gum disease treated?

In its early stages, gum disease can often be treated with multiple routine cleanings to remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar and prevent them from excessive build up. As the disease progresses, deep-cleaning treatments called scaling and root planing might be needed to remove bacteria that has traveled below the gum line into the root pocket. Special antibiotics can be prescribed to destroy bacteria that are difficult to reach.

How can I help prevent periodontal disease?

The best way to prevent gum disease is to have routine dental cleanings to ensure teeth and gums remain free of harmful bacteria. Routine cleanings and checkups can also help identify gum disease in its earliest stages so treatment can be provided right away. In addition to professional cleanings, brushing and flossing regularly can help prevent periodontal disease. During your cleaning appointment, the hygienist can provide you with the proper guidance to ensure your techniques are as effective as possible.
